"Bigharar" (Restless Yearning)
"Restless my sleep, beyond words my grief
Alone I lie at night
In the embrace of your apparition"
After Viet Nam, the Iran-Iraq war was the longest war of the 20th century, in which almost a quarter of a million Persians lost their lives. Just about every Iranian family was touched by this tragedy, and the scars still remain. In "Restless Yearning" Mamak Khadem takes a melody from southern Iran, and a contemporary poem by Siroos Jamali and relates it to the sometimes contradictory desire to cling to memory, while healing one's grief. The elusive dancer is the departed, whose face is almost seen, whose touch is always remembered, but who cannot be held. The music is a cohesive fusion of modern and traditional elements.
