The Road

Inspired by my travels throughout the Middle East, the music of Jostojoo has been a very personal and exciting journey for me. I have had the freedom to explore a variety of different regional and folk melodies not only from Iran but from Greece, Turkey and Armenia and experiment with arrangements that are contemporary and cross over numerous different musical styles. I hope that you will find Jostojoo an auditory and emotional musical experience.

Based on a melody (Ajde Jano) from Serbia, Persian lyrics by Rumi have been adapted to this song. It speaks of love, yearning, and waiting for the Beloved. “I yearn for you night and day…Your love awakens the musician in me, at times I am the harp, at times the lute… I await you night and day.

I find myself restless with thoughts of you night and day
Head over heels for you night and day
The heart and soul of lovers is summoned

This song invokes the beauty of nature and the flame of the sun which is an allegory for two sweethearts’ passion. They set off at dawn in secret towards the mountain, side by side, drunk on love.  They sit on the green grass by the water source and watch the rising of the sun.

A stormy sea and a distraught lovelorn man from Gilan, sings to his beloved Leyli whom he yearns to join. “This wind does not allow my laments to reach your ears tonight, Leyli. A song of yearning in which the lover compares herself to a deer struck by the arrow of love. She wonders who has ensnared her beloved’s heart that  keeps him away from her.  “Oh huntsman! Do not strike me with your arrow! I am the deer of this mountain, I am the injured deer of these mountains wounded by love.”
